An African Christian Perspective

What did Jesus Christ teach about peace, what did He actually mean when He taught about being a peacemaker? Is there a contradiction between Matthew 5:9 and Matthew 10:34-35? Did Jesus Christ advocate Christian militant-ism and violence as some claim?

For the past two weeks the mass media has been awash with references to the Norway killer, Anders Breivik, who murdered more than 70 people as a “Christian Terrorist”. Many Evangelicals, especially in the USA have been greatly disturbed by such references. Other media circles spoke of Anders Breivik as a “Christian fundamentalist”, a phrase that has received considerable opposition from Christian Evangelicals in America.
Given the recent developments in Norway, some Evangelicals have been disturbed by the mass media attention to the killer's "religion", being Christianity. The term "Christian Fundamentalist" with anti-Muslim views has been used to describe the killer in Norway. While the mass media might exaggerate, the history of Christianity is not without blemishes when it comes to religious violence.

Every week seems to bring some big news with such vast contrasts, from, deadly tornadoes in Alabama that claimed 300 lives, the sudden death of a New York iconic Pastor, David Wilkerson, the Royal wedding in the UK, to the death of the chief terrorist Osama Bin Laden. Events seems to be happening faster than we can process or anticipate and will continue to do so.
